Hello and welcome to the November Course update.

Over the past 2 weeks since renovations, the course continues to recover very well, greens are just 0.5mm off our normal cutting heights with most areas knitted in nicely. Some patches remain where aggressive measure to remove poa occurred but will fill in as we increase mowing frequency with lower heights.

Fairways are also recovering well, a granular fertiliser applied last week is now starting to kick in which will increase fairway recovery and should be in excellent condition in the next 2 weeks. Fairways received their first cut since renovations last Thursday and came up a treat !

Though tee renovations were planned to continue through November on a rolling basis between other course maintenance works, the renovation bug kicked in and we completed all Tee renovations early last week. We decided to work extra hours to get them done, rather than have it hanging over our heads for an extended time, basically means we are now ahead of schedule.

All tees were aggressively dethatched, scalped , cored sanded and have had fertiliser and amendments applied.  Recovery speed will depend on warm weather and sunshine, something of which we have had little of since finishes the tees. The forecast ahead seems favourable so we are expecting them to kick on by the end of next week and we should be cutting again the following week.

In some behind the scenes news, over the past 3 months we have been pleased to take delivery of a number of new course maintenance machines and replacement equipment,

A compact Kubota tractor, which will provide versatility for light to medium work whilst also increasing the team’s productivity especially through renovation periods.

An out-front Kubota slasher which will be invaluable for slashing and maintaining large areas efficiently.

We have also renewed our Toro lease equipment, taking replacement delivery of a Proforce Blower, Workman MDX utility vehicle, Pro core and new Toro Greensmower.


These acquisitions represent a significant investment in the long-term quality and presentation of our Golf Course. I would like to sincerely thank Management and the Board of Directors for their continued support and foresight in approving these purchases. The Board’s decision ensures that our team has the right tools to maintain playing surfaces to the standard our members expect, whilst improving efficiency and sustainability into the future

The new Kubota tractor already proved valuable as we would not have been able to come close to completing the recent renovations without it, the Boards foresight in approving this purchase already proving an astute purchase.

Saltene and Couch Grass

I thought I would talk about this subject instead of what has been run of the mill course work updates lately, nothing like a bit of variety to keep it fresh... It is this time of year (summer if you didn't know better) the couch and saltene in the greens become more visible and start to out compete the bent grass. If you have been good students and followed the turf 101's on this blog you would know Bent is a cool season grass preferring cooler temps, Couch and Saltene both warm season grasses preferring hotter temps for optimum growth.  Welcome to course Update for February, and what a roller coaster the past 4 weeks have been !!! We were extremely happy with the course, particularly how the turf surfaces handled the extreme heat through most of the 4 week period and how it was responding to increased maintenance to prepare the course to peak in condition for the Summer Cup, in fact we couldn’t have been any happier with the way the course was tracking, I was about to prepare the blog update with how much better the turf surfaces and greens handled the summer period over that of when I first arrived here years ago !   Then on Friday 31 st January, we experienced a major main line pipe rupture, under the extended car park area. The location of the break and a butterfly isolation valve failing meant we could not isolate the pipe from the system meaning no water to the course.  Of course this coincided with a few 38 degree days !! Hydraulic Oil Leak

Over the weekend we had a Hydraulic Oil leak under the mower when mowing greens, unfortunately as it was pre-dawn mowing with a heavy dew, the operator only detected it when the sun came up after he was halfway through.   Of 13 greens mowed, 8 are effected of which 4 are cause for the most concern. Wishful thinking, I am wondering, and will find out soon enough, with the greens renovations only just completed whether the vigorous growth we have encourage to recover from Reno's and the higher cut we were mowing at will lessen the impact and we may be able to cut out most of it....Experience tells me IT IS wishful thinking. With this type of oil leak, it isn't so much the oil but the temperature of the oil that causes most of the damage, instantly killing the grass it contacts. We have applied Activated Charcoal, and a dilute detergent to deactivate and dilute the oil, there isn't much more we can do I am afraid.  We have sanded the 15th to see if that helps, unfo...
