October Spring Greens Renovations Update

For the first time in 4 years we had a clear run through our Spring Greens Renovation period with the weather, after the past 4 years of rain interruptions I was starting to think I was cursed and as today is Voice referendum day, I think it appropriate to thank Wuluwaid and Bunbulama for turning off the taps this time round ! Please let that be the end of rain affected renovations.

 

Thanks to my fantastic staff who tirelessly put in some very long hours and hard work over the closure period we not only managed to successfully complete the full greens renovation program of verti cutting, coring and sanding, we also completed all Green Approaches to the same program and Tees renovation which were dethatched using a pedestrian verti mower over some 1 Ha of tee area, along with coring and sanding.

This outstanding result with the amount of work required could not be completed without the course closure, the help of our wonderful volunteers cleaning up cores and of course the efforts of our brilliant staff, my thanks to everyone involved, from behind the scenes scheduling with our Course and Match directors, Management and Golf shop staff to ensure smooth transitioning of play to closure times through to our volunteers and staff, thanks again.

 We normally remove excess sand once we are confident all core holes are filled, this year as we have over-sown a number of greens we will be leaving a little more sand on the greens than we normally do, we should still be cutting by day 7 at a higher height of cut (5mm), and by all accounts be getting close to having the greens back in 2 to 3 weeks but please allow at least 4 to 5 weeks for full recovery.

During this time can all players please pay extra attention to repairing pitch marks, the greens are at their most susceptible to damage immediately after renovations, the more care you take now, the greater chance we have of bringing them back into normal play conditions sooner.

Total Area of renovations 2.5Ha

6 million holes punched in

Removed 5 cubic meters of compacted soil material

Applied 75 cubic meters of sand over all renovated surfaces ( varying depths per area)

 15 labour hours pre renovation preparation ( sand excavation and piling and equipment set up)

200 labour hours to complete all renovation procedures.

20 volunteer labour hours

50g pure coffee

24 muffins

1 carton Dry

Ok I jest, the volunteers drank way more than that J

 

The practice tee refurb is next on the list commencing October 23 followed by our Fairway renovations, details of which including closure requirements have been advised by member email.

Welcome to another instalment of the Course Maintenance Blog, I will try and slow down the typing, because we have been going at a cracking pace on the course over the past 6 weeks that would leave the Cup hopefuls in our wake.   The Finish line is in sight for a number of projects undertaken over the last month and looking forward to holding back the reigns( ok no more cup puns) to give time to consolidate the previous work performed.  My thanks to Ben for his tireless efforts, with a great many extra hours worked, my staff who have also worked extra hours and of course both of our major works could not have been completed without the wonderful help of our ever present volunteers. Saltene and Couch Grass

I thought I would talk about this subject instead of what has been run of the mill course work updates lately, nothing like a bit of variety to keep it fresh... It is this time of year (summer if you didn't know better) the couch and saltene in the greens become more visible and start to out compete the bent grass. If you have been good students and followed the turf 101's on this blog you would know Bent is a cool season grass preferring cooler temps, Couch and Saltene both warm season grasses preferring hotter temps for optimum growth. So what happens when the two compete against each other year round ?   During the cooler months,  April through October the Bent grass out competes the Couch and Saltene, the Couch and Saltene are still there just not as pronounced as during the warmer months, thanks to their vigorous rhizomes even tho the bent has control of the top, the couch and saltene are waiting to pounce when warmer temps arrive due to their extensive rhizome syste

Hydraulic Oil Leak

Over the weekend we had a Hydraulic Oil leak under the mower when mowing greens, unfortunately as it was pre-dawn mowing with a heavy dew, the operator only detected it when the sun came up after he was halfway through.   Of 13 greens mowed, 8 are effected of which 4 are cause for the most concern. Wishful thinking, I am wondering, and will find out soon enough, with the greens renovations only just completed whether the vigorous growth we have encourage to recover from Reno's and the higher cut we were mowing at will lessen the impact and we may be able to cut out most of it....Experience tells me IT IS wishful thinking. With this type of oil leak, it isn't so much the oil but the temperature of the oil that causes most of the damage, instantly killing the grass it contacts. We have applied Activated Charcoal, and a dilute detergent to deactivate and dilute the oil, there isn't much more we can do I am afraid.  We have sanded the 15th to see if that helps, unfo
